An exhibition exploring the life of one of Scotland`s most colourful men is currently on show at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. Admiral Thomas Cochrane was the inspiration behind CS Forester`s Hornblower novels and the blockbuster movie Master and Commander and, with this event exploring his past in more detail than ever before, it is easy to see why this mercurial figure has captured the imagination for hundreds of years.
The exhibition, which is free to enter and runs until 19 February, features a stunning selection of Cochrane`s personal and military effects – such as swords and medals – and charts his amazing life story, including details of the swashbuckling exploits around the world which were rewarded with a knighthood that was later removed after he was sent to prison for fraud.
