The new look National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh has welcomed more than 2.3 million people through its doors since its impressive developments were unveiled a year ago.

The figure has helped the popular attraction become the most visited in the UK outside of London according to bosses, who said they believed the institution was now established as one of the ‘great national museums` in the world.

The official figures come days after it was confirmed the next phase of development had secured funding, which is worth £12 million, with eight new galleries due for completion in 2016 part of the project.

In its first year, the museum has experienced phenomenal success, bringing home a string of accolades and awards, including the prestigious Dooland Prize for Scotland`s best building.
