"HOTEL IS FAR TOO HOT "

Apart from the over heating ( and I am some one who is always cold) so this was extreme, the hotel and staff were pleasant and the location is good for the station and town.

"Nice but noisy! "

The hotel was lovely, the staff were helpful, the hotel was in a great location, and the buffet breakfast was very nice. Unfortunately we were on level -1 which was extremely noisy. We were woken up both nights by the staff emptying glass bottles and rubbish into the bins right outside our room which was very frustrating. Apart from that we had a very nice stay.

"lovely hotel, shabby around the edges"

We had a perfectly comfortable one night stay at the Royal York. The room was spacious and clean but a little shabby around the edges. For example! some bathroom tiles weren`t fixed in properly and there was a stain on the blind yet there was a brand new beautiful glass sink? And in the bedroom there was a huge clean extremely comfortable bed but next to that was an ironing board attached to the wall with a brown stained cover. We got a great deal on this hotel with hotel direct but I would have been extremely gutted if had paid more money to stay there and I don`t think I would stay there again. Also! because of reviews like this on trip advisor I had emailed the hotel prior to arrival and was given `one of their nicest rooms`.

We have stayed at the hotel before as a couple but we have never taken our children before. On this occasion we took our daughter. We really enjoy staying at the Hotel and this was our third visit. The only negative thing I would say is the room we were in was in the basement and right next to the kitchen. Therefore up to twelve at night it was noisy and first thing in the morning. Not the best room we`ve stayed in. It wouldn`t put us off going again but I would specifically ask not to be in the basement !!

A quality hotel...... however there is no way I would have booked to stay the night of Friday 31st December if I`d known that the restaurant was closed and that bar meals were not available after 5.30pm. Even their own website is incorrect, stating no restaurant facilities only between 23rd & 28th December.

"The staff were so friendly and helpful they are to be congratulated"

The facilities need a facelift! The arm on a chair in my room fell off and there was no water coming through the hot tap of the handbasin in the bathroom although both were attended toimmediately by the staff. The rooms, staircases etc., are beginning to look very "sad".

"Would not rush back"

Not particularly impressed with the room, very small for a double. Noise from the bathroom when taps were running and on the Monday morning noise early in the morning from outside, probably as rubbish was being removed. Hotel bar prices are exorbitant. This was reflected in the number of people using the bar late at night. Generally overall impression was poor, however good service from the receptionist.

the hotel was lovely you couldnt fault itthe breakfast was lovely it was a full english and continental and was cooked to perfect none of the burnt shitthe rooms are very pleaseant only in some rooms the bathroom was very small the facillites was great using a steam room sauna pool gym and jacuzziwould defo stay again

The Royal York is conveniently located - minutes from the station and city centre. The only downside of this is that it can be noisy (probably best to request a room facing away from the station.) The leisure facilities are good and we enjoyed using the pool and gym. Our room was very comfortable and scrupulously clean. Staff were attentive and helpful. Overall, the hotel has a relaxing atmosphere and I would recommend it for a short break.

"Lovely Hotel, friendly and helpful staff"

The Hotel was lovely however when we arrived they didn`t have our booking but this was soon rectified. The bedroom was very palatial but the bathroom was cold. The breakfast was lovely and it was served until 12.00 which was a bonus. The spa facilities where very good and we took advantage of them on more than one occassion. Bar good and conseirge very helpfull. Would recommend this hotel for a long weekend.

"Too noisy"

Great local - right next to York Rail & Couch Station. Rooms are very nice, clean and convenient designed. Very friendly staff and good service. Good breakfast! The only negitive point: I book for a stardand twin room and what you get from this price here are all too noisy as the outside of the rooms are surrounded by a main road and the railways. So I paid an extra £20/night upgrading to a room with garden view, which is at the front side of the hotel. Unfortunetly, my room is right next to the staires. Every early morning, the housekeeping`s trolley passed my room time by time making a lot of loud noises.

"Room was cramped"

Although the room was clean and modernly decorated it was extremely small and cramped. The room became uncomfortably hot and stuffy during the night and with one window painted shut and the other window unable to stay open meant for a sleepless night. Buffet style breakfast?? Not what i expected for the money I paid.

"Imposing building from the outside...."

Impressive interior, sympathetic mixture of original features with modern decor. Staff very attentive and responsive especially when the fire alarm went off and they reacted quickly and professionally (false alarm). Room comfortable and adequate - shame about the view of the roof of York Railway Station!! Breakfast catered for most needs and was well cooked and plentiful.Although we travelled by train, we were surprised that the hotel charged for guest car parking, when smaller hotels we have stayed in in York haven`t charged. Bar prices, to be expected, expensive.All in all a most enjoyable stay. We shall return.

"Overpriced!!!!! This was far from the standard we expected."

The bedrooms were adequate but one of our rooms had no heating, which in November is disgraceful. It took 24 hours before any positive action was taken, even then it was only supplying small electric heater. When you are staying for only 2 days this is a big part of your stay.It was obvious that the hotel bar staff were more concerned with ensuring corporate parties were better looked after than standard paying guests, even though we paid the same high prices we were consistently overlooked for these people to the point of invisibility. Breakfast on the first day was disorganised and a bit of a shambles with staff in a total flap. We were fine with the wait but to be seated at a table that had not been cleared was unimpressive.The only real plus side was the leisure facilities which were good, and the staff helpful.We will not be rushing back.

"The perfect place to stay in York, convenient for city in pleasant surroundings."

Service excellent. Have stayed at this hotel on four occasions now and it has never disappointed. Hotel is family friendly and comfortable but is worthy of its four star status. Will definitely return again.

"Nothing special"

I felt a little let down with the royal hotel in york. 1st there was no where to park which resulted in me paying £7 to park else where. There`s a nice grand entrance with a nice staircase but thats where it ends for me. the room was shabby, the swimming pool basic and small. breakfast was buffy service which is never a good sign. overall it was ok bot not worth the amount we paid, and to top it off they charge you £10 to park in the hotel !!!!!!

"Room very good and comfortable - view disappointing and quite noisy with the trains at times"

When we arrived at the hotel - they did not have our reservation - they tried to contact you but could not get hold of you, so we had to wait for them to organise another you for us. When we we leaving they tried to charge me again - and I had to go through the situation again. It was a good job I had the ref. No. as I booked it over the phone. I would probably book on-line next time as then I would have had proper paperwork.

"All aboard !!!!"

The hotel was set in beautiful grounds situated near to town and the station. The station was a bit of an issue with trains clattering past and the announcements that loud you could here them clearly. I was woken by the train to sheffield departing at 630am!!!!

"The hotel had not received are booking so they did not have a room for us."

the room we had was very small, but they did move us the next night to a bigger room. The hotel itself was excellent . We would not reccomend booking online.
