One of London`s most consistently popular sporting spectacles, this year`s Boat Race will be launching from Putney Bridge on 7 April. Pitting crews from Oxford and Cambridge universities against each other annually since 1856, the race has become synonymous with the London calendar over the years and is now a much-loved spectator event.
The 2012 race will be the 157th of its kind and is, of course, free to view from the banks of the Thames. Rowing through four-and-a-half miles past West London river banks, the teams will pass landmarks like Craven Cottage, the home of Fulham Football Club, before reaching the finish line at Chiswick Bridge.
Although the competition itself is always engrossing, the Boat Race is most known for the party atmosphere which surrounds the day. With thousands of people turning out every year, the race is always a good opportunity to see the vibrancy of London in full swing.
If you are looking at staying in one of the
London hotels this year, why not plan your trip around this great free event and enjoy a day out by the river to remember?
