Forget the Loch Ness Monster and the Yeti, London has its own mysterious sighting to solve.

Images were captured on camera of what appeared to be a large dog by a student taking a stroll in Hackney Marshes, 30 years after an unexplained account of a mystery beast sparked a thorough search for a suspected bear on the loose.

Helen Murray was near the Old River Lea on bank holiday Monday earlier this month and was stopped in her tracks by the unidentified creature, which was larger than a person in shaggy black fur.

The terrified student recalled: ‘I tried to stay calm as I wasn`t sure what animal it was or if it was even alive. I had my phone ready to call 999. Then the creature moved. Somehow I managed to take a couple of pictures before I ran`.

An area of grassland on the western bank of the River Lea, the Hackney Marshes offers a great opportunity for any of those enjoying a break in one of the fantastic London hotels a chance to stretch their legs. Be sure to explore the area and see if you can spot the ‘Beast of Hackney Marshes.`
