An exhibition of the late Lucian Freud`s portraits is set to open at the National Portrait Gallery in London, the first major exhibition since his death in July last year.
Running from 9 February – May 28, the works on show by Freud, widely considered the pre-eminent British artist of his time, encapsulate his style and focus on the often uncomfortable, yet beautifully raw relationship between himself and the featured model.
The exhibition maps out the entire trajectory of his career, with early paintings more associated with surrealism and the depiction of people, plants and animals in unusual juxtapositions. From the 1950`s his style changed somewhat, and he began focusing on portraiture, often nudes, constructing thickly impasted figure paintings combined with deep psychological penetration.
