After months of waiting and eager anticipation, the London 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony is taking place in the capital tonight, in what many are predicting to be one of the most important events in the city`s rich historical past.

The Olympic flame is making its final journey along the Thames on the Queen`s rowbarge Gloriana today as excitement surrounding the Games reaches fever pitch.

A global TV audience of around one billion will be watching the event tonight, exposing London to the world on a scale never seen before.

Meanwhile, a three minute bell-ringing took place from 08: 12 BST to mark the Cultural Olympiad, with Big Ben chiming 40 times in three minutes, the first time it has done so since the funeral of King George VI.
