The Show
This haunting story follows the life of Amir, a merchant's son from Kabul, whose family fled war torn Afghanistan for America when he was a boy, separating him from his closest friend Hassan, a young servant of his father's. The play focuses on the guilt that plagues Amir throughout his adult life after he fails to save Hassan from an act of violence that tears the two apart. The Kiterunner is directed by Giles Croft, who has been the artistic director at the Nottingham Playhouse for 18 years, and sees Ben Turner, famous for his role as Jay Faldren in Casualty, return to the lead to play Amir as both adult and child. This powerful adaption is set amongst the complex history of Afghanistan, from the collapse of the monarchy to the rise of the Taliban, spanning several decades as Amir tries to make amends for his actions as a child. This moving tale appeals to all, surpassing its cultural backdrop to address themes of friendship, betrayal and finally redemption. Please note: This play is not suitable for children under the age of 14.

History of The Kiterunner
Matthew Spangler had the momentous task of adapting Khaled Hosseini's 2003 book The Kiterunner for the stage - a book which topped the New York Times bestseller list for two years. It has been translated into sixty different languages and was made into a film in 2007. His adaption premiered in San Francisco in 2009 and in Britain in 2013 with a co-production between Nottingham Playhouse and Liverpool Everyman Theatre, sparking tour dates across Europe. This West End Premiere will be the ninth production of Spangler's adaption of The Kiterunner.

Awards and What the Critics say
The Kiterunner was nominated for a WhatsOnStage Award for Best Regional Production for its run at the Nottingham Playhouse and received praise from many critics. Dominic Cavendish from The Telegraph says 'Giles Croft has brought Khaled Hosseini's best-selling 2003 novel to the stage with terrific lan', while Alan Geary from the Nottingham Post describes how 'it has all the narrative thrust and emotional power of one of those bulky Victorian novels; and is every bit as satisfying'. Joyce McMillan from The Scotsman writes of the plays difficult subject matter, saying that 'Giles Croft's fine, eloquent production - with superb live music from tabla-player Hanif Khan - dramatises all of this in a flowing, lyrical style, full of understated dance and glowing visual images', and that it is 'remarkable in its power to evoke both the beauty and resilience of Afghanistan, and the sheer human heartbreak of its recent history.'
