Kensington was traditionally an upmarket West London residential area but the expansion of shopping along Kensington High Street and development of the adjoining Knightsbridge area in the 20th century, along with the famous museums, have put Kensington firmly on the map as a great area to stay during a London break. Kensington hotels offer proximity to 3 of London`s finest (and still free) museums; the Natural History Museum, The Science Museum and the V&A (Victoria and Albert Museum). The Royal Albert Hall and Kensington Gardens are two further famed district attractions. Kensington is well placed for access into, and getting around London. The Piccadilly Underground Line is equally useful for whizzing you into the West End, or out to Heathrow. Dating back almost a thousand years, Kensington is recorded in the Domesday Book and became one of the city`s wealthier areas as London grew to become the metropolis you see today.
