Ciutat Vella (literally the Old City) is District Number 1 in Barcelona and as the Catalan name describes, the oldest section of the city and arguably its most charming and fascinating. Ciutat Vella rests comfortably between the Mediterranean port and beaches and the 19th and 20th century extension of Barcelona called Eixample. Ciutat Vella is made up of 4 smaller districts including La Barceloneta by the seafront and El Gotic; the Gothic Quarter. El Raval and Sant Pere are the remaining two sub-districts. Ciutat also contains the lower section of Las Ramblas; the tourist favourite that literally rambles northwards from the beachfront through the Old City.
