"Great building which has not been maintained is poorly lit. "

My room was isolated near some plant which ran all night. Could have been hung, drawn and quartered and no body would have known. Even the newspaper was not delivered so I could have been undiscovered for days. Expensive for what you got. Breakfast at £30 was a nonsense.

"Charming Hotel an Art Deco Treat"

The Palace Hotel is easy to locate thanks to the striking clock tower visible on the Manchester Skyline. Although the reception staff were too stretched for a speedy check-in, they were friendly and accommodating. The room was gorgeous, spacious with fabulous high ceilings, though no biscuits on the tea tray :(. I would definitely stay again, although never on St. George`s Day thanks to the raucous celebrations led by an over enthusiastic out-of-tune crooner hired for the event, which seriously marred our enjoyment of the superb meal at Tempus restaurant.

Excellent service but was disappointed that even though there were empty rooms, we had to pay for early access and there was no free upgrade as mentioned on line. Breakfast was great too.

"Impressive building"

Overall good hotel, but bedroom (164) in need of some refurbishment and some means of cleaning the very dirty outside windows needs addressing. Tempus bar very good ambience and staff. Breakfast choice (particularly the extra choice board) very good and again staff very good. Good hotel for a really good weekend break but shabbiness and dirty windows slightly spoiled it.

Although all the relevant equipment was available I was surprised this was rated 4 star. Perhaps we were unfortunate in our rooms, but they were in the old services areas of the original victorian building and accessed via long musty depressing corridors, and almost under the arches of the railway line. Lovely old building but needs more TLC and to be more welcoming. I would consider staying again but ask for rooms above street level and not on railway line. Used as a conference and exhibition venue and showing signs of wear and tear. Quite expensive too.

"Quirky, grand and cheerful"

It`s always a pleasure to stay at the Palace: it`s quirky, the building is hilariously grand and imaginatively converted, the rooms interesting and comfortable, breakfast nicely done, and the staff cheerful and helpful. The crazy arrangement of the lifts and the slightly `Shining` feel to the corridors are part of the charm when one`s feeling cheerful; can be a bit tiring when exhaustion has set in.

"Disaster from the time of arrival"

Overbooked, given a dreadful suite, eg room to bathroom didnt shut, totally freezing, put you up bed in living room with no curtains at window, then changed to another room, but this time my daughter and myself could not be together had to have two single rooms which rather spoilt our time together. Staff couldnt be bothered, will not be going back there ever!

"Very disappointing rooms"

We stayed for one night and were offered three different rooms and I only took the last one as I was told it had air-con. Unfortunately due to the time it too to book in we were going out and had to rush but when we arrived back to the room we discovered that the air-con didn`t even work. The reception area looks amazing but the rooms are very poor. I won`t stay again.

"Not a World Beater"

Rooms have been recently refurbished to a good standard but could do with a more relaxing seating and a fridge. Service in the Tempus Bar left a lot to be desired as did the welcome and friendliness of the reception. We also experienced street noise through the night and had a bad nights sleep - it was a Saturday night! Breakfast was good as where the staff.

"dated in some areas but good value for money"

After reading other reviews was a bit anxious however room was very spacious and bathroom on a grand scale only prob radiator would not turn off and windows did not open very much so had to have fan on all night and in order to do this had to leave small light on. Also at end receptionist failed to ask if we enjoyed stay but people next to us were asked!! This was a value for money hotel in terms that we were seeing a show next door so met our requirements but next time think we would use the Hilton as same price.

"Noisy room with no hot water"

Not four star at all. I was awake all night in such a noisy room and had no hot water in the morning. The staff at breakfast never made any attempt to provide a service and begrudgingly did so when asked. Disappointing.

"Rooms poor - finally had 3rd room on offer. Disturbances in night - had to call security"

First 2 rooms offered were extremely poor - one was musty and damp, the other was extremely small & cramped. In final room, the TV did not work properly. In the night a drunk man kept knocking ob our door. In morning kept being disturbed by maids as computer said we had checked out. No refund offered. Will never go back.

The hotel was in a good location. When we arrived our rooms weren`t ready but this was soon resolved and we were upgraded. The rooms were very small although very clean and had everything you needed. The bar area was lovely and the breakfast was good. We would stay again.

"Turning a Theatre Night into a Leisure Experience"

It`s not the big things that make a hotel stay enjoyable. You expect a standard commensurate with the price you pay. This hotel is a good standard, comfortable rooms, adequate bathroom facilities and excellent restaurant with high standard cuisine and service. The little things are being presented with chipped cups (x2), and room service/housekeeping that doesn`t turn up in the morning to provide extra tea bags on request .That turns the visit into a hit and miss affair, and a "maybe we`ll come back and maybe we won`t". It is good for the hotel management and staff to remember that this isn`t the first hotel that guests have stayed in and it won`t be the last, but without attention to detail it may be the last time at the "Palace".

A bit of a walk to the main shopping area, but ideal for a visit to the Palace Theatre which is just opposite. Would definately go back.

Stayed over night 14th March 09. The hotel is very dramatic and a beautiful building. our room was a bit on the small side, but was perfectly adequate for a night`s stay. Breakfast was good and the staff were friendly and helpful. Would I stay there again? Yes.

"Slow Staff"

Upon arrival, we were given a room that had been a smoking room, it was that bad we had to stand in the corridor until a staff member came to check it and then gave us an alternative room. In our new room we had a few disturbances with staff advising we had ordered water when we hadn`t and a wake up call. The staff in the restaurant/Bar were very slow, after 10 mins of waiting we asked a member of staff if our drink order would be much longer, to be told it was busy and that we were placed in a queue! The bar hadf approximately 15 people! Eventually we realised our drinks had been sat on the bar and we went to collect them ouraselves. Sunday moring, we considered booking the lazy Sunday package but were woken up by builing works at 08:10am! Waited 10 minutes to be seated for breakfast which was completely average to say the least.

"Well situatedhotel and very comfortable. Interesting old building"

Breakfast was fine and the service both friendly and efficient but we found the service rather slow in the Tempus bar at lunch time. We did not eat dinner in the hotel

"NICE HOTEL SHAME ABOUT THE ROOM"

The hotel has a fantastic design and is in a great location. The only down side was the room which were given. We would have had more room in a rabbit hutch! the room was far too overpriced for what it was. The room was far too hot and I think we must have been near a boiler room. If we had known earlier how hot it was going to be we would have asked to have been moved. It was only after coming back from dinner late did we notice how hot the room was and there were no air conditioning or windows to open. We did make a complaint to the hotel reception but there was little they could do about it at that stage. For £104 a night we did expect alot more for our money.

"Beautiful Hotel, Friendly Staff and Lovely Rooms."

The Hotel is in a great location and is absolutely stunning. The Rooms were spacious, very clean and beautifully furnished. The staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was delicious and well organised....after breakfast we went for coffee and were very reluctant to leave, we would definately stay there again.

The hotel was a beautiful building which was well presented and clean. The staff were friendly and helpful. However the room that we were given was nothing like the pictures shown when we booked the hotel or what we expected to find. This was very disappointing, instead of modern and stylish we found ourself in a clean but very outdated room. Very misleading. I would suggest this hotel to other people but I would advise them to request one of the recently refurbished room so that they are not disappointed when they are given something else.
