"Road noise"

Stayed for one night in room 611 overlooking a very busy road. The doubled glazed window would not close properly leaving a small gap and as a consequence the room was extremely noisy with the constant sound of road traffic throughout the evening and all through the night. Even wearing ear plugs did not exclude the noise which resulted in a very poor nights sleep. The toilet was very slow to fill up after use. Hotel reasonably priced for central location a bit jaded and tatty around the edges but staff on reception helpful and apart from the window problem would say it was average. You get what you pay for.

"Great location, lovely staff"

Right outside the railway station but surprisingly peaceful. Clean beds, nice bar area, helpful staff, good restaurant. Could use a bit of a makeover as a little but `tired` but, perfectly reasonable.

"Great stay at the thistle"

Arrived early but no problem in checking in, was offered noisier room at the front with view or quieter room at the rear, choose the room at the front of the hotel big mistake, the noise was awful till around 4am would choose quieter room next time. Bedroom furniture has saw better days but room was clean, warm and cosy with a very comfy bed nice fresh bedding and new pillows. Buffet style breakfast was excellent. Choose the thistle because of the location, two minute walk from Waverley station, Playhouse and many restaurants and bars. Lovely stay would definitely return only to a quieter room next time.

"Nice hotel, good location, friendly staff but building and fittings looking tired."

Our room on fifth floor was nice but pillows were uncomfortable. Bathroom door ill fitting and noisy to close. Lack of surface area in bathroom for toilet bags etc. A fridge and clock radio would have been useful. We opted not to use the restaurant since menus were limited and not good value for money compared with good venues in town. Staff friendly and helpful. Would short stay again (max 4 nights) but for longer stays look elsewhere.

"The King James Hotel an outstanding welcoming and comfortable place to stay."

The bedroom, cleanliness and space was excellent. The helpfulness of the staff was brilliant. The food was scrummy. The proximity to Edinburgh and all its attractions is superb.

"Comfortable Hotel"

We had a very nice stay at the hotel. Everyone was friendly and helpful and easy access to the city by foot. My only negative comment would be that the hair dryers in the bathroom are useless so take your own. I loved Edinburgh and would definitely come back and stay at the Thistle Hotel.

"Hotel is run down. Basic hotel, not a 4 star hotel"

we got a deal for 2 nights for £137.00. the stay was worth that but on the actual hotel website it was over 300 for 2 nights. If I had paid that i would have been very disappointed. Good central location, breakfast was nice enough. Excellent for parking as you can use the John lewis car park next door for 6 pounds. frooms basic and only 4 basic tv channels. we enjoyed our stay and had a nice few drinks in the hotel bar. Not sure if I would class this hotel as 4 star.

"Nice Central Hotel in Edinburgh"

Room was clean, with toiletries supplied, breakfast adequate ,would be good if breakfast was included in the booking fee rather than having to pay for it separately at the hotel. Chambermaid Kasia very nice girl and helpful. Overall the stay was good and I would recommend this hotel to visitors.

"Hotel Location excellent for Town Centre Shopping, Tours, Transport to Airport etc."

Just need to check that room reserved is the one that was paid for in advance. On arriving at hotel I was located in a single room, although a twin room paid for but was not advised of this when booking in.

Lovely staff, very friendly however the hotel is a tired old lady. The DOUBLE room we booked has the smallest double bed I have ever seen in my life and my husband and I are approx 5.3" & 5.5" and probably do not weigh 20 stone between us and we struggled to sleep in this tiny bed. There was only 1 bath and 1 hand towel but when I mentioned this to reception she said oh there may have been more in the wardrobe. Silly me for not searching for more towels. That aside the room was very clean and the location is perfect for the Theatre and central Edinburgh, but they play on the location.

"Lovely hotel"

The King James Thistle hotel is a lovely hotel. Very very clean, quiet, rooms nice, bath & shower excellent. Staff really helpful, nothing a bother. Two minutes walk from Waverley Train Station & Princes St. Will defiantly stay again.

When we went to breakfast the older lady how was serving was not to friendly . She was banging plates and looked very cross. She was moaning about toast machine and you did not feel comfortable to approach her. She forgot about our coffee. When it did come at the end of breakfast instead at start she brought 1 coffee and 1 tea instead of 2 coffees. Not a great look for hotel. Apart from this everything was great. It`s a shame she lets it all down.

All the fascilities at the hotel were good. The only slight disappointment was on arrival, the offer I had booked stated 2 single beds and free breakfast in the deal, but I had to explain and point this out for reception staff. Surely staff should be aware of online booking deals to prevent customers feeling as if they have misunderstood the offer- it was on the printout.

"Room first class but not dining room!!!!"

Young man at desk very polite and helpful.Room 640 was on 6th floor at the front,and was immaculate!Noise doesn`t bother us as we live on a noisy main road anyway!My partner felt ill so didn`t have dinner,but I ordered steak very well done,and it was as tough as old boots! Couldn`t eat it. Just ate the chips and tomato.The waitress said we could have a drink each but we declined.Manager never came near,yet he was at the man at next table,THREE times asking if everything was ok etc.A bit much I would say.Also,regarding my meal,it arrived on a cold plate!!!What kind of chef does not heat the plates?Yes,we would stay again as it is so handy for everywhere, but would definitely not eat there.The draughts from windows was dreadful.Heard another lady asking to move table for that reason.Apart from dining experience,we would say go for it!!!

"Most satisfied with all aspects of the hotel. Staff were friendly, welcoming & competent."

We will certainly make use of the King James in future and would recommend it to friends and family. We are a little concerned about `rumours` of major structural/building changes in the immediate area and we trust that the hotel will remain in situ ad infinitum.

"decent basic hotel"

We were in Delux king size room which was small though quite comfortable, the bathroom was very small with the usual accoutrements, however no conditioner, which my Wife says is a must. We had a meal in the restaurant which we both enjoyed and the staff were all polite and very helpful, however for the price we paid for two nights I would expect a bathroom where I could swing a cat if I so desired, also very disappointed to have no fridge in the room (regard this as a must) breakfast was as standard, going cold quickly due to cool plates. Would not rate hotel as 4 star at best 3 star

"Nice Hotel, Great Location!"

Hi, I booked this hotel for an overnight stay in February,whilst arriving very early (9am) i was given my room by a very friendly receptionist.Room was a king size deluxe, very spacious, very clean and great value, well worth the £80 or so i spent, Did not eat at the hotel, but bar staff were friendly and efficient. All in all would highly recommend this hotel and would have no hesitation in staying at the Thistle again.
