Ain`t Too Proud
The Show
The musical stylings of legendary Motown group The Temptations are set to take the West End by storm in 2023 with the highly anticipated arrival of Ain't Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations. This incredible show follows the renowned group's meteoric rise to stardom, from their humble beginnings on the streets of Detroit all the way to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. In 1960s America, against a backdrop of brutal discrimination and political turmoil, five brilliant young musicians - David Ruffin, Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams - defied all odds to become a global soul sensation. Filled with celebrated hits like "My Girl" and "Papa Was a Rolling Stone", Ain't Too Proud follows them on their musical journey, exploring the trials and tribulations of this iconic band and promising a great night out for lifelong fans and newcomers alike.

History of Ain't Too Proud
Produced by original member Otis Williams and based on Dominique Morisseau's book of the same name, Ain't Too Proud originally premiered in 2017 in California before opening on Broadway in 2019, where it was met with multiple awards. Universally recognised and beloved for their distinct harmonies, snappy dress sense and stunning choreography, The Temptations have sold millions of albums worldwide and are counted among the most successful vocal groups of all time, and the show's huge success reflects this. This West End production welcomes back Tony Award winner Des McAnuff as director alongside award-winning choreographer Sergio Trujillo, both of whom have previously worked on the critically acclaimed Jersey Boys.

Awards and what Critics Say
Much like the band itself, the musical story of the Temptations has wowed audiences the world over. Writing in The Daily Beast in 2019, critic Tim Teeman called the show 'A gold-standard triumph.' 'The story of The Temptations,' he wrote, 'of how music is made and enjoyed, is right here, rooted in a past that is tough, funny, glamorous [and] dramatic.' Ain't Too Proud has also garnered multiple awards, including the 2019 Tony Award for Best Choreography.

Interesting facts about Ain't Too Proud
After premiering at the Berkeley Rep in Berkeley, California, Ain't Too Proud quickly became the theatre's highest-grossing production of all time, a record it still holds today. Over their 50-year history, there have been a total of 26 members of the Temptations, including Ray Davis, who would himself be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of psychedelic funk group Parliament-Funkadelic.
