The Show Dear Evan Hansen, described as 'the musical of its generation' by BBC Radio 2, has returned to the West End, finally giving audiences a chance to experience this deeply moving tale first-hand. Troubled highschooler Evan Hansen is treated with indifference by most of his peers, and with outright hostility by the bullying Connor Murphy. But when Connor dies in tragic circumstances, Evan, through a series of misunderstandings, finds himself fabricating a long-standing friendship with his deceased classmate. As the lies grow ever larger and more difficult to control, Evan begins to draw away from his family and few friends, even as he grows closer with Connor's sister Zoe. Directed by Michael Greif and scored by the brilliantly creative songwriters behind La La Land and The Greatest Showman, Dear Evan Hansen is an essential musical exploration of grief and alienation, told with great sensitivity and surprising humour.
History of Dear Evan Hansen Dear Evan Hansen was first conceived in 2015 by Director Michael Greif, and premiered off-Broadway in Washington, D.C. with Ben Platt in the role of Evan. After multiple performances on and off-Broadway, and a national US tour in 2018, the show was brought to the West End, where it was met with commercial success and critical acclaim. A film adaptation, also starring Platt, was produced in 2021. Now, in 2022, Dear Evan Hansen has returned to London for a whole new audience.
Awards and What the Critics Say In its initial 2016 Broadway run, Dear Evan Hansen won six Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Original Score. Its West End production, meanwhile, garnered three Olivier Awards. The show has also been a critical success; In his five-star review, Paul Taylor of the Independent called Dear Evan Hansen 'sublime' and 'unmissable,' while Clive Davis of The Times perfectly described the show as 'a courageous and often witty attempt to make sense of adolescent trauma.'
