The Show
The musical Hairspray is based on the film written and directed by John Waters in 1988. Set in Baltimore in 1962, the musical follows American teen Tracy Turnblad, who's dream is to sing and dance on the local afternoon TV show "The Corny Collins Show", which is based on the real-life Buddy Dean Show. Despite not being the usual 'thin' teenager that the show goes for, Tracy wins the dancing role and becomes a celebrity overnight. She meets and socialises with a range of characters including African Americans, which in 60's America is frowned upon. This leads to her campaigning for the shows integration of all cultures and contributes to the social changes in Baltimore. Hairspray is full of 1960's dance music along with downtown music and rhythm and blues.

History of Hairspray
Hairspray originally started out as a film made by John Waters and had moderate success, however in the early 1990's, the film was released on home video and it became a 'cult classic'. The Broadway Musical of Hairspray was created in 2002 and won 8 Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Original Score. New-Line Cinema adapted and remade a film version of Hairspray in 2007, having it primarily based on the stage musical rather than the 1988 film. The 2007 version of Hairspray broke the record for the biggest sales of an opening weekend for a movie musical, holding the title until the 2008 film Mamma Mia. Hairspray the musical first started its Broadway tour in 2002 and premiered at the West End on 30th October 2007. It ran for 2 years and had over 1000 performances before leaving, but now it's back for 12 weeks!
