London Bridge, spanning the River Thames between the City of London and the Southbank, with Tower Bridge down-river and Westminster Bridge further up-river, has a colourful and rich history. The present bridge opened in 1973 replacing an attractive 19th-century stone-arched bridge, which in turn superseded a 600-year-old medieval structure. Hotels near London Bridge benefit from the City of London on one side of the bridge and Waterloo and the Southwark on the other. London Bridge is also an underground station offering swift access across the Thames to Westminster and the heart of London.

The severed heads of traitors were once impaled on pikes on Old London Bridge. The head of the historic champion of Scottish independance, William Wallace, was the first to appear in 1305. Over 30 heads at any one time were counted spiked at the bridge gatehouse and dipped in tar to preserve their gory warning!
