"Good view of Edinburgh Castle"

The hotel and staff were lovely, the only drawback is that there is no parking so it`s a bit of a problem if you take the car. Otherwise I would definitely recommend this hotel.

"Pleasant place in Central Edinburgh"

We found this place at short notice and were happy enough with the service. The lack of parking is a common issue in central Edinburgh. The service was friendly and appropriate, but we didn`t have many special requests either. I would stay there again.

"A really lovely hotel"

I never stay anywhere else when I come to Edinburgh. It`s clean and quiet; the staff are very pleasant and helpful; the entrance hall, dining room and library are magnificent; and it`s in a safe, quiet and very beautiful area of the city within easy reach of the centre. The rooms are tastefully decorated, whether you have one of the large, splendid rooms on the first floor or in the smaller single rooms on the upper floors. On each of the three or four occasions I`ve stayed there I`ve had a room with an interesting view. The breakfasts are good - perhaps not the very best I`ve ever tasted, but still very edible, with plenty of different options. I always feel completely at home there. It`s my idea of the perfect hotel.

"A lovely Edinburgh townhouse hotel situated in a quiet but central part of town."

The hotel`s situation is perfect, close to Charlotte Square but in a quiet location overlooking Dean Village. It`s within easy walk of the Haymarket station and airport bus stop. The accommodation is spacious and charming with a spectacular hall and dining room. The bedrooms are large and comfortable. The breakfast was excellent and copious, the staff very helpful and friendly. We would definitely return.

"Very good breakfast and staff were very helpful and friendly."

It was in a very quiet area, but only 5-10mins from Princes Street and the city centre. The Bar did not seem very busy, not that we stayed in at night, most nights we were out till midnight. I would certainly stay there again.

Melvin House is a lovely Victorian building in a convenient central location, but far enough away from Princes Street that it is quiet at night. The room was clean and had a great view over a nearby park. The common areas of the hotel are all in keeping with the period of the building and feature wood pannelling and an impressive staircase. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the breakfast was superb. A minor point, but the bedroom doors did not fit in with the rest of the hotel, as they were flimsy and modern. Overall, a great place that represented good value.

"... as expected ..."

common rooms are great ... victorian styleDiscount rate ... small room ... just to sleep ... as expected ...One problem: Shower out of order (should be an exception)

"Well positioned, period features, clean, friendly staff, excellent breakfast & choice of food"

Only one disadvantage. The bar closed to guests at 11pm.I witnessed 7 people being refused service at 10.45pm due to the fact that staff wanted to lock the room ( bar ). This, in my opinion, was not a hospitible gesture or cost effective.

"Old world charm"

Ideal location only 5 mins or so from Edinburgh`s West End. Surprised (but delighted) to find a 32" Samsung LCD TV in the room. Excellent breakfast and friendly staff. The lift is tiny ( 2 people or 1 American) but evrything else about this hotel is on a grand scale.

"A warm welcome in a beautiful house"

We were made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived. We felt like guests in a beautiful private house. Bed was really comfortable and the room and ensuite very clean with plenty of storage. In a lovely area but in walking distance from the main tourist areas. Breakfasts were fantastic. Would love to stay there again

"Good Hotel located in an elegant part of West End Edinburgh"

The Hotel is located in a cresent amongst fantastic town houses overlooking a green and within walking distance (less than a mile) from Princes Street et al. Our 4th floor room had a great view of the castle. The room itself was a little on the small size, but was clean and had all the usual facilities, including a very good shower! The breakfast buffet was excellent as was the scrambled eggs on toast. We found the staff to be friendly and helpful. This hotel proved to be excellent value for money.

Impressive public rooms (dining room, stairs) and good location. Friendly helpful staff. Informal restaurants close by. Parking is a pain though - if you do bring your car, the max stay is 4 hrs in outer zone (costs £5) - and dont take any risks by not having correct ticket (cost us £30 extra).

"Overall a good experience "

Lovely Hotel, our room was bright and we had a lovely view of the castle, a short walk from the main tourist areas. Staff were pleasant and helpful. Breakfast was lovely loads of variety on the buffet table, I would have liked to see a vegetarian version of the full breakfast and as I was in Scotland some smoked salmon with the scrambled eggs. on the whole a good experience.

Beautiful hotel very conveniently located in quiet area close to centre, excellent service and breakfast, room on the small side but spacious bathroom, noSky TV though and the lift is a tight fit even for 2 fairly slim people with or without luggage. On the whole though, a very enjoyable stay.
