The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, colloquially and more simply called Drury Lane, is a West End theatre in Covent Garden. The current building is the most recent of four theatres which were constructed on the same Drury Lane site, the earliest of which dates back to 1663, making it London`s oldest theatre site. The building that stands there today opened in 1812. The various theatres` stages have been graced over the centuries by no less than Nell Gwyn, Ivor Novello and Monty Python. More recent note worthies include the magnificent Cameron Mackintosh production of Oliver! which began in December 2008 and played at the theatre until January 2011. Shrek the Musical then began performances in May 2011. Hotels near the Theatre Royal Drury Lane are not only perfect for a theatre break taking in the hit musical Shrek, but also place you in Covent Garden; which for a London trip, is probably where you would want to be with or without an Ogre!
