Very nice looking hotel, and location is excellent. However when we arrived, our room was so small we thought it was a single. Tried various times to call reception and no one ever answered. Was so tired we slept in it first night, and second day went down to reception in person to ask for a larger room. They changed it no bother. Got in to the (much larger) room - very strong smell of vomit. (Admittedly it was party night and Christmas time the night before and maybe more likely at this time of year). But found the source of it - the rug on top of the bed - surely the cleaners should`ve taken this away to be properly cleaned and not just mopped it up and put back on the bed. You couldn`t have missed the smell. Again tried to call reception & houskeeping and both just rang out. Stuffed the rug in the wardrobe and had to make the best of it. Would only go back to hotel if could guarantee a decent sized, fresh smelling room! Food in restaurant excellent but quite over priced.

"Amazing hotel, but check where your room is....."

Lovely hotel, Grand, spacious rooms, friendly staff but do check where your room is situated..... we were next to the railway and the freight trains passed our window every hour during the night resulting in no sleep as was very very noisy....

"Very polite and friendly service. "

Disappointed with room cracked wash hand basin right hand window unable to close once opened. Excellent breakfast choice. Toast soggy, toaster must be broken, bread only toasted on one side. Very fresh eggs.

"Bedroom 125 rather threadbare, not up to 4* standard. No hot water in morning. Just tepid!!"

Breakfast and staff were, as always good. Stayed at this hotel a large number of times in last 3yrs and so usually satisfied. Maintenance and decor problems dont seem to be tackled. Filthy carpet at entrance to lifts on ground floor near main staircase, not changed over the full 3yrs I`ve visited. The lovely building needs some tender loving care and investment.

"a beautiful and original hotel"

I found this hotel to be relaxing, beautifully decorated with excellent and friendly staff. The rooms were done to a very high standard which was unusual with them being tiled but beautifully done. They were very warm, on the large size and furnished lovely. I would love to visit the hotel again. The only down side I would mention is that it doesn`t have a beauty / spa department which I think would be a wonderful advantage.

"Beautiful Hotel, sumptuous rooms, clean bathrooms and an overall welcoming feel. "

The young lady who checked us out on the morning of Wed. 12th Dec. 07 was extremely polite and chatty and the gentleman I spoke to in the evening to ask if we could have a late check out was also very accomodating. However I do think the bar staff who were quite rude and abit haughty need some customer care training. I appreciate at this time of year you are extremely busy but I do think the barstaff could at least try and be a bit more jovial. This however didn`t deter us from having a lovely stay. Thanks

"4 Star hotel with some very avaerage rooms (be careful when booking!)"

This hotel did not live up to our expectations. Although listed as a four star with a recent 7 million pound refit there are several `internet rooms!` which are much more basic and have much less prestige than the rest of the hotel ie. they are in the basement at the back and a travel inn has better quality fixtures & fittings. Yes you can get a good rate online however it still costs over £100 per night per room and the quality you get for this is not as you would expect. We have recently written to the hotel manager ref. our issues and he has been decent enough to write back with an appology and explaination as to the condition of the particular room that we stayed in - having said that we still paid out for a very sub-standard stay at we thought would be a luxurious four star hotel. Buyer be aware..contents for this place may not be exactly what is written on the label!

I found that overal the hotel was excellent! Location was good, booking in was quick and easy, staff were pleasant and the room was probably too big but is that a bad thing?

"Make sure you upgrade to refurbished room"

Fantastic hotel, we were first allocated a room on the first floor (above basement). These haven`t yet been refurbished (or atleast didn`t look like they had) but have an `interesting` feature of tiled (as in old Victorian baths / underground) walls which didnt` appeal. Valence missing on bed, and dirty surround of bed, pretty yukky bathroom. So, we asked at reception and were upgraded to an AMAZING refurbished twin room (2 x double beds) on the third floor. It was gorgeous, fantastic bathroom and a room was massive. Luxury. No mini bar or fridge but that`s fine!! Would definatley recommend. Very central and great bar / restaurant. Highly recommended.

"fusty bedding and cold water - but nice staff"

concierge and reception staff were friendfly and helpful. That`s the good bit. Through the sheets and pillow cases were clean, the pillows and duvet smelt fusty and gorrible. Each morning when I woke there was no hot water. Staff acknowledged that this was a frequent problem when the hotel wa full. Generous buffet breakfast, but I had to wait 20 mins for coffee, and only got it after repeated reminders. Not good enough for a hotel in this price range.

Whatever you do, promise me you will take out into the street and shoot whover did the corridor decor. Brown floral carpets and ikea fire doors dont fit with the beautiful staircases and tiles. In my room (219) I could hear every word spoken by the young lady in the room next door..presumably she could hear me too. Creepy! If you are going to charge £100 an night why bother to charge 75 pence for newspapers and then generate a receipt etc. It pissed me off and probably cost you more than 75p in administration costs to generate the receipt. I am 6 foot 3. the sink in the bathroom was touching my kneecaps.

"Over Booked"

The Hotel was fully booked. Our Vice Presdient had to move hotels along with all of the other people i have booked in. I appreciate the price difference was paid but i had wanted them to stay at the palace.

"Although we had a no smoking room it was clear from the smell and the amount of cigaret end on "

the window sill that someone had been smoking in the room. We did ask for some additional milk and sugar but this never appeared. also, it might be a nice touch to have some water on hand, and maybe a note to say if the tap water was alright to drink. It is often the little things that undo all the hard work your hotel has worked to achived.

"Old conversion with lots of character."

I was really impressed with this building, cleverly converted from old (Victorian?) landmark. The service was fine and it is a great location. The only minor gripe was that our room was on the Mezzanine floor, which was generally dark, dank and stuffy. However, the room was comfortable and kept clean. I`d go there again but would request a different floor.

"excellent location, excellent hotel"

I would definitely recommend this hotel. It is really central & just over the road from Revolution vodka bar. The Staff are really friendly & helpful, the concierge is was a young lad who had just started at the hotel 4 weeks ago but he was so pro active & helpful, he marked off the top restaurants & bars in Manchester & brought the map up to our room for us. Nothing was too much trouble for this hotel. Prices are what you would expect of a 4* hotel in a city. It would have been a nice touch to also have complimentary bottled water in the room as to buy them from the hotel bar was £4.40 a bottle!

Good hotel - comfy rooms - unusual decor - but be careful to choose room away from noisy road and trains!! Would definitely recommend a stay - and we will be back when we go to collect our son from Manchester University.

"Beautiful but rude"

The bar and restaurant were great. The complimentary breakfast buffet was fantastic. However, the conceirage often made rude commentary and acted put upon when ever asked of anything (which is there job afterall). The service could definitely have been better but the hotel itself was pretty and has a great location for the city.
