"Basic"

Enjoyed stay at the hotel. Rooms were clean but very basic. Not suitable for anyone wishing a quiet stay as hotel is joined onto a pub.

"The staff were brilliant providing help on what to see and how to get around."

The hotel itself is good with the room providing the bare essentials for any traveller. Unfortunately the room I had (206) was directly above the bar and facing the street so noise was a problem on the weekends with the bar closing at 0100 and the nearby night spots at 0300. I think this nees to be highlighted as I may have choosen a different hotel to get some sleep had I known. Having said that the hotel is very central and easy walking distance to most of the attractions in town with the Lawn Markets and Grass Markets just 5 minutes away. The girl at the front desk was very helpfu in highlighting places to see (good and bad weather) and how best to achieve it and I left Edinburgh having seen all that I wanted and having a greaty experience in the meantime. I doubt some of this would not have been possible without the assistance from the girl at the front desk - thanks.

If your 18 to 30, hen night, stag night - this is the place for you. If you want to experience Edinburgh and have some sleep at night - forget it!! Reception staff were not warm and welcoming. Run out of many things at breakfast. For the price - very very disappointing. It was adequate!!

Main issues, dirty room, cracked tiles in bathroom, light above banthroom sink not working, shelf above bathroom sloping could not put anything on it. Switch in main room did not work. Holes in the walls where something had been previously attached, ariel socket for TV off the wall. Room not serviced on the Sunday.Overall very poor and I could not reccommend it to anyone.

"Noise"

Be prepared for a lot and I mean a lot of noise due to the 3 Sisters Bar having full use of the forecourt with outside table and chairs, and also 3 televisions outside with a DJ at night, lots of people milling, which we found quite intimidating trying to get to the hotel entrance. If you are a student, fantastic!

"one step up from a hostel. "

I have stayed at Tailors Hall three times now. the first time which was some years ago it was great as it hadn`t quite got the stag and hen party reputation it has now. Since then however the hotel has gone down hill quite a lot on standards of decor etc but it has retained its good atmosphere. Due to threadbare carpets, broken toilet in our room, not breakfast being included in the price which was £150 for a triple room, i would consider the hotel now to be more like a hostel. However, the staff were friendly and helpful. it is in a great location. so if you just want somewhere to get your head down - bedding and bathrooms were clean- because you are having a party trip to Edinburgh, this is the place. if you want something little more up market, then it is isnt.

"BANK HOTEL, EDINBURGH"

We really enjoyed our stay at the Bank Hotel, Edinburgh and not Tailors hall as we were moved when arrived! Glad we did as it looked as if would of been very noisy - lots of young ones arriving. Val Gardiner

"Suitable for the purpose of our visit"

This hotel has a good and interesting history. and therefore can be forgiven for being situated in a less than salubrious area of Edinburgh. The directions they gave us to find the hotel were not good and resulted in our walking much further than needed with our cases. however once we arrived the staff were welcoming. The rooms were adequate but could have done with a lick of paint. One of our cups had no handle and in one room there was no extra blanket. The shower was fantastic - powerful and hot. We had asked for rooms away from the noise of the bar, and there was indeed minimal noise during our stay. We had continental breakfast and this was excellent and the staff very friendly and helpful. Dont expect miracles from this hotel but it was good value for money.

"It is next door to the largest pub in Edinburgh and situated in Cowgate which is an unpleasant road."

Ideal for groups of young people wanting a really lively pub and live music. My own room was quiet, reasonably clean and well heated, but rather dark and shabby. Staff helpful and friendly. Excellent bar food next door in the pub. Cowgate though it leads out to busy bright areas and is near to the National Museum and bus routes to town is actually a menacing road to walk down after dark with few shops or cafes, odd dark turnings and doorways.

A few rough edges but staff were first class. The staff in both the hotel and the adjacent bar were very friendly, professional and attentive.. Reception staff were great, helping me with my luggage and giving me a room away from the lively football fans who were watching an international match on TV. By the way the Three Sisters served the best burger I`ve tasted for years!!!!!

"Very noisy with the ground floor bar/disco/nightclub"

The rooms could benefit from a refresh and the noise from the Three Sisters can be a major problem for some rooms as the bar is open `til 3am. We had to change rooms as the originally booked room overlooked the courtyard, and we were not warned about the noise until the early hours.

"Hotel room window/Noise/Man entering hotel room/Shabiness of room"

Hotel room window was like prison cell window that we couldnt open, which made the room very hot and realised thats why there was a fan by the bed. The noise was from the courtyard was appauling at nightime when we were trying to sleep. A man entered our hotel room at 7.30am sunday morning and switched the light on while we were laying in bed! The shabiness of the black fungi on the bathroom ceiling was very unsightly and the water pressure from the sink was poor.

"Customer Service Training Needed"

The Safe was not working, Female staff not interested in fixing, did offer Receiption safe but this was not suitable as items were needed regularly. Breakfast was poor, dry rubbery bacon and egg, old stock grapes, staff took far too long to greet and provide drinks, I ended up with hot water as only normal tea available, no herbal which are avilable in other hotels and anywhere abroad, very disappointed. Shower Head was leathal, shot off the fixing, spraying everywhere, I heard another guest complain of the same thing at breakfast. Asked directions for Indian Restraunt first night, got shrug of shoulders, no attempt to assist this was the same person who said of the safe `I suppose we`ll have to get it fixed` but didn`t. Second night one of the young Male Staff gave us a map and directions to a couple of Indian Restraunts.

"A very disappointing stay!"

The hotel from outside looked ok however not ideal if you want a quiet night as the bar is attached to the building next door and people tend to sit in the courtyard which is directly under your window so the noise is a problem. Also the rooms are vey basic, which could not only do with a lick of paint but the holes filling in the walls where pictures are supposed to be but seems that they haven`t got round to putting any up yet! Also to say its a no smoking hotel the room stank of cigarrette smoke and we had to change rooms the first night - we were not the only ones apparently either as speaking to several other guests this had also been an issue. Overall very disappointing and i wont be recommending this hotel to anyone.

"Noisy"

Noisy, I was aware that this hotel hosts one of the most popular pubs in Edinburgh. The noise from the pub was loud but finished at 1 am which was okay, however I was not prepared for the staff emptying bins , clanging bottles until 2.30 - 3.00 am

The directions to the hotel could indicate which exit to use at Waverley Station, also to explain that one should leave High Street at Hunters Square, continuing to Blair Street and that the Three Shires pub is a facility of the Tailors Hall Inn. The hotel does not have a dining room, but a pub that serves food. Different information came from different members of staff regarding the failure of the pay-per-view television service, ranging from "I will send an engineer to your room" to "the hotel needs a new computer".

"Hotel room grubby, walls, carpet - wallpaper loose on ceiling - horrible place!"

It may have looked ok on website - old character hotel but this was not what I expected or would ever visit again! Noise at 2.00am/ 3.00am from 3 sisters club nearby kept us awake. Also small dark window - just horrble - staff nice that`s all I can say!

"Tired and run down"

Very disappointed in the room. Really run down, wall paper on ceiling hanging off at all seams, walls have had fittings removed and holes left untouched, shower leaked from the hose at both ends, the floor ended up being very wet and dangerous. No electric sockets where required and ones that were there had switches missing.

"Stay spoiled by noisy private party on saturday night"

We have stayed at the Tailor`s Hall on three occasions and we know very well that there is a popular pub on the ground floor, but we have not previously been disturbed to the level we were this time. We believe there was a private party at the pub on Saturday night, and we can appreciate they need the revenue. However, despite our room being on the side/back away from the entrance, we were still aware of shouting and screaming going on well into the small hours (till about 4a.m.), and we found this irritating. While we would not discount returning to the Tailors Hall, I think we would now look at other possibilities or, at least, ask whether any private parties were planned. Hotel staff were their normal helpful selves.

"Disappointing Stay"

Whilst the hotel`s manager could speak English, his accent (not Scottish) was totally incomprehensible. Not ideal when he`s trying to explain anything about your stay. Add to this that the lift to the rooms smelt of urine, and that we were woken up at 5am by a fire alarm (apparently a result of a broken pipe in another room that obviously meant everyone else had to be woken up). Overall, a lovely looking hotel. But some fairly major issues re. hygiene and customer service.

Good location for exploring old part of city, pleasant staff, hotel needs refurb, lift was not working for the 5 days we were there, noisy bar and courtyard adjoining hotel, cooked breakfasts were cold from buffet so didn`t bother after second day , nearest car park good five minute walk away. We are a couple in our late 30`s and enjoy lively night life but the whole street where the hotel is situated has an 18 to 30`s feel about it

"Shabby. Needs a good clean."

Knew about the proximity of the lively pub, but this was not too bad. Wouldn`t be good for young families. Whole hotel needs a really good clean and redecoration. Generally shabby. More worrying was an exposed light fitting in the bathroom. Cupboard lights sellotaped into bathroom unit. One socket had a switch missing so couldn`t be used. Hairdryer stated it had failed safety inspection. Mould on bathroom ceiling. Smelt very damp. Staff very helpful and breakfasts good. Excellent location. If enjoy a lively location and only looking for a room to sleep in it was OK.
