The ShowA crumbling castle stands deep in the wilderness, with a mysterious presence lurking within. Count Dracula has been hiding dormant in the shadows for centuries but now has his eyes on a fresh target and a new era of terror begins. Bram Stokerâs classic tale is brought to life in this new one-person show starring Grammy, Tony and Emmy award winner Cynthia Erivo (Wicked, Wicked: For Good, The Color Purple). With harrowing twists and turns, the story takes the audience on a journey and explores themes of fear, modernity versus tradition and the struggle between good and evil. Erivo ambitiously takes on all 23 roles in this new stage adaptation directed by Tony award nominee, Kip Williams. The show has a clever combination of Cynthiaâs in person stage acting, and pre-recorded work that plays on screens behind her, which allows the audience to fully immerse themselves in the story being told.
History of DraculaIrish author Bram Stokerâs Dracula was published in 1897 whilst he was working as a manager for Henry Irvingâs Lyceum Theatre. It is a Gothic horror that introduced vampire Count Dracula, who is based on and embodies many traits of Vlad the Impaler. Over time, Dracula has become a cultural icon and has inspired many versions of the story and influenced writers to create books, films and television shows that either directly reference or have shaped what we know Dracula to be today. It has been played in theatres throughout the world from as early as 1897, the year it was written, after Stoker secured the theatre rights the same month it was published and staged a reading at the Lyceum. It has been adapted many times by different directors and producers, with some altering or compressing the story throughout the years. In this new revival, fans of Stokerâs novel will be pleased with how faithful Kip Williams remains to the original, with the dialogue being in the form of diary entries and letters.

Awards and what the critics have to say"... Cynthia Erivo gives an extraordinary, shape shifting performance in this one-woman multimedia adaptation" - Nick Curtis, The Standard
"It's clever, technically. But it's also an ingenious contemporary response to the themes of death, desire, transgression and identity running through the novel, and to prejudiced attitudes to outsiders. On one level, Dracula feels like a stage evocation of the slippery nature of consciousness, folding us in and out of the dark byways of the imagination. Meanwhile, the archly gothic, camp style reacts knowingly to its place in the history of the tale" - Sarah Hemming, The Financial Times"
"This radical adaptation of Bram Stoker's 1897 vampire classic raises the stakes for British theatre. Although audiences here may be familiar now with Williams's groundbreaking form of "cine-theatre", the wow factor remains. Williams's boundary-breaking artistic toolkit brings out the thematic heart of the matter" â Dominic Cavendish, The Telegraph
'A one-woman tour de force' - Daily Mail
