The Show One of the most beloved shows ever returns to the West End once more! Oliver! Is a "musical masterpiece" (Sunday Times) and is revisited by producer Cameron Mackintosh and award-winning director and choreographer Matthew Bourne. Together, they have created this spectacular and imaginative new production which is sure to impress audiences at the Gielgud Theatre. As based on Charles Dickens' famous novel, the young orphan Oliver is living in a Victorian workhouse before he is taken under the wing of a lively London gang led by Fagin and the Artful Dodger, also finding a friend in warm-hearted Nancy. When he is wrongly arrested for stealing, Oliver's new life and family become in danger before an unexpected hero shows him that real happiness might be just around the corner.
History of Oliver This musical is based on the 1838 novel Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens and was the first musical adaption of a famous Charles Dickens work to become a stage hit. Lionel Bart was the mind behind the music, lyrics and book for this show, which first premiered at the Wimbledon Theatre on 30 June 1960 and ran for 2,618 performances. The show eventually made its way to Broadway in 1963 and closed late 1964 after 774 performances. Both the West End and Broadway productions were followed with massive success and the show is now a household name, with special help from the 1968 film adaptation. The show has currently received around 17 major separate productions including many West End and Broadway revivals and tours as well as being one of the most popular plays to recreate for schools across the world. This current 2024-2025 West End production follows a sell-out season at Chichester Festival Theatre. The duo behind this new production are known for being responsible for some of the UK's biggest shows such as Les Miserables, The Phantom of the Opera, Mary Poppins, Nutcracker! And The Red Shoes.
