History of RENTRENT began as an adaptation of La Boheme, Puccini's 1893 opera, by Billy Aronson and Jonathan Larson, who dreamed of "bringing musical theatre to the MTV generation." That dream came true soon after the show's 1993 debut: critics and audiences alike praised the songs, story and representation of people living with HIV. Since then the show has gathered a cult following of fans (known as "RENT-heads"), and been adapted into a film by Home Alone director Chris Columbus.
