"Palace Hotel...Saturday 12th July 2008"

My wife and I went to see Kylie on the Saturday 12th of June, as we live in Yorkshire we decided to make a weekend of it and booked into the Palace for the saturday night. On arrival we were greeted by a very pleasant receptionist and took her offer of an upgrade for £25, which included a larger room, air conditioning, free sunday paper and 2 complimentory drinks at the bar. Although we could not find the controls for the air con and never used the drinks vouchers. The room was very clean, comfortable and stlylish and the breakfast and dining room staff were excellent. On check out we were being checked out by the what seemed to be the head receptionist, but she broke off from checking us out and passed us down the counter to a junior member of staff when a American airline crew arrived, which I thought was a bit rude. Anyway Kylie was Great !

Stylish, clean and spacious room. Some train noise from Oxford Road station with rooms at the back. Lovely bar area and very friendly staff. Good central location.

"Had to request quilt cover that fiited quilt and was not torm. "

Room was next to lift which was noisy but as lift eventually broke down this was not a problem. Broken lift meant walking up to 4th floor. Punblic areas very nice and service was good as was breakfast. Room average.

the hotel and food were excellant, however the bedroom we stayed in could do with abit of a refurbishment. The windows didnt open and we couldn`t get the air conditioning to work. Whatever the "church thing" going on on sunday morning was very of putting I have nothing against religion but to have it screamed out to you from a microphone at full blast when you are going for breakfast was too much. Would probably stop again but not on a saturday night!

"Hotel accommodation was overall very good - could have better car parking facilities!!"

Hotel was very comfortable and staff were courteous and friendly dining area was very attractive as was the food presentation. Rooms were spacious and full marks for cleanliness!! Car parking was a bit difficult could provide better and closer facilities . Overall we had a lovely stay.

"cracked sink, bath and floor tles."

Selction of early bird food unless you chose the dish of the day was not good. The starter I had was goat cheese salad but when I received it it was a wedge of a cheese flan. The main coarse vegetables were over cooked and the potato was under cooked and hard.. The dessert had frozen fruit within it and it was still thawing out on my plate. I think that in its day the Palace was a palace of a hotel but now it needs a complete overal.

"A very convenient hotel, especially for The Palace Theatre, and also easy walking into the city."

The room was large and spotless with windows that open! Breakfast was excellent. Discounted rates for hotel guests at the car park behind the hotel was a bonus. All in all a very pleasant stay.

"Noisy by day, very noisy by night the sound insulation (if any) seems to be non exisiting and those "

trains, all night. Had a long wait for breakfast. The staff were cheerful and helpful. The room was differant to say the least and the bathroom was th best part of the hotel and that was very tired. I would only stay again if it were the only bed left in Manchester!!!! and even then I would think that te car may be a better option.

"An upgrade to the newly refurbished rooms is a must else ypu will be disappointed"

Stayed with a work colleague for two nights. The hotel is a in a slightly tatty area of the Centre of Manchester but is close to shopping, restaurants, G mex etc. There was scaffolding around the hotel due to the refurbishments. Our upgraded contemporary room was lovely, well furnished and the mirrors make you lose two dress sizes!! Tea/coffee/biscuits a bit short on supply. All the staff were really friendly, polite and helpful. The bar and restaurant were also modern and nice to relax and eat in. Breakfasts were superb but we didn`t eat in the restaurant in the evening but heard other guests complimenting the food. For a city centre 4 star hotel the room per night price was good value.

"Clean but soul less"

We booked The Palace thinking it had history and charm. But we found just another souless hotel. Whilst the public spaces are huge and extraordinary, the room was less than ordinary, a bit shabby and over heated! Disappointing when booked as part of a special birthday weekend,

The overnight stay on 2nd April 2008 cost £116 however, a colleague booked through `late rooms.com` and was quoted and paid £89 for the same room a matter of 2 days before. As I shall be a fairly regular visitor to Manchster from London, can this anomaly be resolved, because by booking direct with the hotel it has cost me £27 more? I raised this when booking out but the receptionist (Claire) could not comment. I look forward to hearing from you, Yours sincerely, Anthony Rimmer

"Highly recommended"

As a coeliac I was impressed with the care that the staff took to ensure that my food was kept separate from other foods and they prepared interesting food which was safe for me to eat. Thank you, the service was excellent

"Impressive building but standard of rooms is hit and miss."

This is a massive (architecturally beautiful) building, however the scale of the place means that some rooms are in the bowels of the basement. It is a hike to get to your room and as a lone female I felt very isolated. I was attending a function in the Grand Room which was magnificently laid out, however the standard of food for such a large function was poor.

"Poor room service"

The Hotel and room are of a 4 star standard. The room service and breakfast however are very POOR...We would rather go up the road to have a full English than eat at the Hotel..Staff in general are helpfull...however it took 15 mins for the cutlery to arrive after it was left off our breakfast tray....and we paid £20 for it to be brought to the room....movies are expensive at £9.00

"DISAPPOINTING"

very friendly staff, warm and engageing, but sadly lacking in the level of service that would put the palace hotel as a leading provider in the manchester region. the quality of service seems to cease after 10pm, no blankets no room service ( or extremly slow) this is my second stay in the Palace and i came back because of the wow factor and quality of the room. I f what i saw yesterday was my first visit i would think twice about coming back.

"mostly young staff who are VERY efficient ,courteous and friendly"

very clean . good food(although not a wide choice) really the only fault was lack of air due to not being able to open the window as it was locked........this i presume was to stop smokers from hanging out the window! my friend and i had to keep going outside for our fix which we were quite angry about as the booking form said `smoking`........and when a private evening function was held several of the party had been smoking in the foyer as butts were everywhere!

"Extremely Grand "

Upon arrival into the main reception area, it is to say the least breath taking! Such a magnificant building which oozes character. The room was better than expected and represented a suite rather then a `standard` room, the bathroom was fabulous! Staff were all friendly and polite and never too busy to help! We also dined in the hotel`s restaurant, service was impeccable, although the only reservation I have was I expected the food to be of higher standards, however, overall a great experience!

Very nice looking hotel, and location is excellent. However when we arrived, our room was so small we thought it was a single. Tried various times to call reception and no one ever answered. Was so tired we slept in it first night, and second day went down to reception in person to ask for a larger room. They changed it no bother. Got in to the (much larger) room - very strong smell of vomit. (Admittedly it was party night and Christmas time the night before and maybe more likely at this time of year). But found the source of it - the rug on top of the bed - surely the cleaners should`ve taken this away to be properly cleaned and not just mopped it up and put back on the bed. You couldn`t have missed the smell. Again tried to call reception & houskeeping and both just rang out. Stuffed the rug in the wardrobe and had to make the best of it. Would only go back to hotel if could guarantee a decent sized, fresh smelling room! Food in restaurant excellent but quite over priced.

"Amazing hotel, but check where your room is....."

"Bedroom 125 rather threadbare, not up to 4* standard. No hot water in morning. Just tepid!!"

Breakfast and staff were, as always good. Stayed at this hotel a large number of times in last 3yrs and so usually satisfied. Maintenance and decor problems dont seem to be tackled. Filthy carpet at entrance to lifts on ground floor near main staircase, not changed over the full 3yrs I`ve visited. The lovely building needs some tender loving care and investment.

"a beautiful and original hotel"

I found this hotel to be relaxing, beautifully decorated with excellent and friendly staff. The rooms were done to a very high standard which was unusual with them being tiled but beautifully done. They were very warm, on the large size and furnished lovely. I would love to visit the hotel again. The only down side I would mention is that it doesn`t have a beauty / spa department which I think would be a wonderful advantage.

"Beautiful Hotel, sumptuous rooms, clean bathrooms and an overall welcoming feel. "

The young lady who checked us out on the morning of Wed. 12th Dec. 07 was extremely polite and chatty and the gentleman I spoke to in the evening to ask if we could have a late check out was also very accomodating. However I do think the bar staff who were quite rude and abit haughty need some customer care training. I appreciate at this time of year you are extremely busy but I do think the barstaff could at least try and be a bit more jovial. This however didn`t deter us from having a lovely stay. Thanks

"4 Star hotel with some very avaerage rooms (be careful when booking!)"

This hotel did not live up to our expectations. Although listed as a four star with a recent 7 million pound refit there are several `internet rooms!` which are much more basic and have much less prestige than the rest of the hotel ie. they are in the basement at the back and a travel inn has better quality fixtures & fittings. Yes you can get a good rate online however it still costs over £100 per night per room and the quality you get for this is not as you would expect. We have recently written to the hotel manager ref. our issues and he has been decent enough to write back with an appology and explaination as to the condition of the particular room that we stayed in - having said that we still paid out for a very sub-standard stay at we thought would be a luxurious four star hotel. Buyer be aware..contents for this place may not be exactly what is written on the label!
